Answers to common questions about using Talk To Dot.
Getting started
How do I start using Talk To Dot?
Open Talk To Dot in your browser at my.talktodot.app. Sign in, then tap the Start button in the centre of the screen. The app will ask permission to use your microphone — tap Allow. Once connected, prop your device where it can be seen clearly and the conversation will begin appearing on screen.
What's the best way to set it up?
Propping a tablet or phone upright where the hard-of-hearing person can see it clearly works best. A stand or phone holder is useful for keeping it steady. Make sure the microphone is unobstructed and not covered by a case.
How do I stop a session?
Open the settings drawer (gear icon in the top bar) and tap Reset conversation. This clears the current conversation and returns you to the Start screen. There is no separate Stop button.
Speaker identification
How does Talk To Dot tell speakers apart?
Talk To Dot automatically detects different voices and assigns each speaker a colour. A coloured dot appears in the conversation each time the speaker changes, so it's always clear who is speaking.
Can I give speakers names?
Yes. Tap the people icon in the top bar to open the speakers panel. Tap any speaker's entry to type their name. The name appears immediately against their colour throughout the current conversation.
Hiding speakers
Can I hide a specific speaker's words?
Yes. Open the speakers panel (people icon) and tap the toggle next to any speaker to hide their transcription. Tap again to show it.
Settings
How do I change the font or text size?
Open the settings drawer (gear icon) and choose from five fonts and three text sizes — Small, Medium, and Large.
How do I switch between dark and light mode?
Open the settings drawer. The dark/light toggle is at the top. By default, Talk To Dot follows your device's system setting. You can override this manually.
What is the session timeout?
If no speech is detected for a set period, Talk To Dot pauses automatically and shows a Transcription paused message. The default is 5 minutes. You can change this to anywhere from 2 minutes to Never in the settings drawer. Setting it to Never is useful if you leave Talk To Dot running all day on a dedicated device.
Minutes and billing
What counts as a minute?
Minutes are counted based on how long a transcription session is open and connected. The timer runs from when you tap Start until you reset the conversation. Talk To Dot automatically closes the connection after 60 seconds of silence to avoid counting quiet periods — so a 30-minute conversation with pauses will typically use fewer than 30 minutes.
What happens when I'm running low?
A warning banner appears when you have less than 10% of your monthly minutes remaining. You can check your exact balance at any time on your account page.
What happens if I run out mid-conversation?
Transcription pauses and you'll see an option to upgrade your plan. You can upgrade instantly and resume the conversation without starting over.
When do my minutes reset?
Minutes reset on your billing renewal date — not the 1st of every calendar month. Your renewal date is shown on your account page.
Do unused minutes roll over?
No. Unused minutes expire at the end of each billing month.
Troubleshooting
The app is asking for microphone permission — what do I do?
Tap Allow when prompted. If you accidentally tapped Don't Allow, you'll need to enable microphone access in your browser settings:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone → Allow for my.talktodot.app
- Safari on iPhone: Settings app → Safari → Microphone → Allow
- Safari on iPad: Settings app → Safari → Microphone → Allow
The screen is going to sleep mid-conversation.
Talk To Dot tries to keep your screen awake while a session is running. However, some devices (particularly iPhones on low power mode) may override this. To prevent sleep: on iPhone, go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → Never (remember to change it back after).
Words seem to be missing at the start of a sentence.
Talk To Dot uses a technique to capture the beginning of speech even during reconnections. Occasionally the very first word of a sentence after a pause may be missed. If this happens often, try moving your device closer to the people speaking.
What happens if my connection drops?
Talk To Dot tries to reconnect automatically. If it can't, you'll see a message with a button to reconnect — your conversation isn't lost while this happens. If it keeps happening, check your internet connection; switching from mobile data to Wi-Fi usually helps.
Privacy
Is my audio stored or recorded?
No. Audio is streamed in real time for transcription and is never stored by Talk To Dot. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
